The best reason to create pattern-filled charts is to make them look old timey. In this example we are going to recreate this chart from the wonderful book:

In making a block classification chart it is important that shadings ranging from white (or light) to black are chosen to correspond to correct gradations of value.

The states are arranged according to their total ranking in all twelve educational features; thus Washington state which ranked among the first
12 states in all but one feature is listed first, and Alabama which ranked among the lowest 12 states in all 12 features is listed last.
